Grover Miller, Jr. Obituary

Grover Miller, Jr. (78)
was born April, 9, 1942 in Kinston, NC to Grover C Miller (deceased) and Della Mae Cobb Miller. Grover departed this life Monday February 15, 2021 at the Hyattsville Nursing and Subacute Rehab Facility in Hyattsville, Md. Grover received his education in Kinston, NC where he graduated from Adkin High School in 1960. Grover was very close with two childhood friends, James McManus and Lloyd McNair. After high school, Grover enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country as an Electrician’s Mate aboard the Aircraft Carriers, USS Kearsarge, CVS-33, and USS Ticonderoga, CV-14, before receiving his honorable discharge in 1964. After his military service, Grover relocated to Washington, DC and continued a close friendship with Lloyd McNair and Lloyd’s family. Eventually Grover met and married his lovely wife, Elaine B. James. Grover worked as an electrician for the Washington, DC school system. However, Grover always aspired to become an independent business person and became an owner of a cab where he became a cab driver in the district and surrounding areas. Grover enjoyed being his own boss. If you knew Grover, you know he liked “doing his own thing”. Grover also liked taking his children and friends fishing. He was an avid pool player and enjoyed bowling. Oh, and let’s not forget Grover’s fondness for a good “glass” of the finest wine or liquor along with his sense of humor.
Everyone who met Grover was in awe of his knowledge of nature and the universe. Grover had a love of science and was curious about life, God and nature in general. He enjoyed talking about stars, planets, black holes, and other objects out in space. Grover often expressed ideas with anyone who would engage him in conversation about new inventions and how he could patent them.
Most do not know that Grover was a poet-of-sorts. When he would write his sister, Lois, he made sure the sentences rhymed, for example: “Hey sis, just writing to see how you doing, are you washing dishes or just sitting around chewing." Grover had a great sense of humor. He sometimes called himself “His Craziness, Milgro Sam, Country Slim” and others we fondly remember. Grover could be very funny and entertaining. He is survived by, his mother, Della Mae Cobb Miller (98 years old) Kinston, NC; Elaine B. James (former wife) of Maryland; two daughters, Elaine “Lisa” Caver and Beverly Pitt of Maryland; sons Grover Miller II of Snowhill, NC; Gerald Caver and Omar Washington of Maryland; two sisters, Lois Miller-Miller (Charlie) of Brooklyn, NY; Della (Maybaby) Miller Darden (Clinton) of Kinston, NC; 12 grandchildren, Tonya, Gerald, Jerrelle, Jane’, Terry, Charlie, Aleicia, Grover III, Shayla, Omar, Zion, and Zori; 7 great-grandchildren; 5 nephews, Toye Miller of VA; Darryl Harris of NY; Dion Turnage, Toby Miller, and Maurice Sutton (deceased) of NC; a niece Vikki Harris Ismael of DC. He was preceded in death by: Grover C. Miller (father); Pargie Miller Turnage (sister); Rudie, Willie, Calvin (3 brothers); Mark Anthony Miller (son); Rhonda Miller (daughter); and Maurice Sutton (nephew). Truly, we will miss Grover with his humor and genius ideas.
Private Graveside Service will be held at Baltimore National Cemetery.
