Veronica Neal-Formey passed away peacefully following a recently diagnosed illness on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Born Veronica Alfreda Neal at DC General Hospital on October 25, 1949, she was affectionately known as "Ronnie" by friends and family. Ronnie lived her early years in Washington, DC where she attended Kelly Miller Junior High. She graduated from Margaret Murray Washington Vocational School in 1968 where she began the study of her lifelong career in nursing. She passed her state boards and began her career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), working in local hospitals including Howard University Hospital and DC General Hospital. She advanced her education at Prince George's Community College becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1992.
She was an energetic advocate for the profession of nursing and its critical importance to high-quality, equitable health care. She served as a member of and led several professional and philanthropic organizations. She was a long-time member of District of Columbia Nurses Association (DCNA) serving on the Board of Directors. She supported DCNA during her tenure as President of the DC General Local Bargaining Unit and Member At-Large Officer of the Economic and General Welfare Cabinet which was actively involved with collective bargaining for professional nurses. After the closing of DC General where she provided care in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Ronnie worked in DC Public Schools providing care and resources to school children.
Ronnie was an active philanthropist and deeply involved with many organizations. As a past Treasurer of the Prince George's County chapter of the Ladies of Charity, she will be missed as the current Vice President. She became a member of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated. She held many leadership roles in the Sorority, including Treasurer and Secretary, to support its mission and advocacy for the nursing profession and her commitment to service in healthcare delivery in the community. While she served in many positions at the local, regional and national levels she was best known for using her sharp parliamentary skills to assist in guiding meetings. She mentored members and served as Chair of the Sorority's National Bylaws Committee. She was the local Chapter's Parliamentarian, Chair of the Bylaws and Jurisprudence Committees as well as a member of the Board of Directors. This includes her membership in the McCaskill Unit Parliamentary Group and the District of Columbia and National Association of Parliamentarians.
Ronnie is survived by her beloved husband, Cornell J. Formey, and step-sons, Michael, Jerry and Jerome. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Neal Brooks (William, deceased). She was predeceased by her mother, Lillian Moore Neal, her father, Wilfred J. Neal, Sr., her sister, Colleen Olivia Neal and her younger brothers, Wilfred J. Neal, Jr. (Barbara, deceased) and Keith Neal. She loved and was loved by 3 generations of nieces and nephews.
She will be deeply missed by so many close friends and sister-friends.
