Obituary

Sylvester Frazier (Buddy), 83, of Bladensburg, Maryland was born to loving parents, George Washington, Sr. and Mabel Easter Frazier, on March 7, 1934. He passed away Thursday morning, May 25, 2017 at the Villa Rosa Rehabilitation Center in Mitchellville, Maryland. The second of seven children, he was born in Hopewell, Virginia, but moved as a toddler to Baltimore, Maryland where he was raised. He attended grades Kindergarten through 12th grade in the Baltimore School System where he excelled in track and art. He grew up with the epitome of a huge and loving family--his cousins, aunts, uncles and other relatives were extremely close and usually nearby. He eventually met and married Shirley Griffin, where they had two beautiful children, Sherry and Mark. After the end of his first marriage he met and married Edith V. Stephenson; they had four children together, Brian, Karen, Kim and Yvette. They were married 52 years and had a wonderful and adventurous life together. Early on he was employed by Refratories in Baltimore where he learned how to work with bricks. Eventually he went to work for Chesapeake Cadillac where he learned how to drive big Rigs. This became his primary employment. He would also drive Double Trailers for UPS and Buses for Baltimore Transit. He then worked for Bevard Brothers where he had a perfect driving record and eventually retired. Buddy was a Mason and had many hobbies: fixing cars, television sets, he excelled in piano, organ, guitar, harmonica, drawing, painting in oils and acrylics (all self taught), dancing and singing. He attended Prince Georges Community College in 1988 where art was his major (just to gain more perspective). In his lifetime he has painted at least 300-500 paintings on all different types of media to include Michelob bottles and screens and giving them away to family members. Traveling was one of his passions. He visited Hawaii, Canada, Detroit, Los Angeles, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and all up and down the Atlantic Seaboard. He really enjoyed picnicking and fishing at over 50 different sites; would teach family members and friends starting from age 2 and up. If you could hold a fishing pole you were ready. He and Edith loved Atlantic City and stayed either daily, overnight, 4 days to a week, usually winning. He was a loving, patient, caring, and nurturing man. When he walked into a room, he lit it up with his smile. He was known to tell many jokes a lot of them would end with a dog. When anyone came over he was quick to reach for his organ, harmonica or piano and ask what song you want to hear. All you had to do was hum it and he could play it (not knowing the song originally). When Edith became ill, he did a lot of the cooking (extremely well), slow cooking everything in the oven where any meat he touched would melt in your mouth. He also enjoyed playing games such as cards, Dominoes and Pictionary; although he would argue that he didn't know how to play and then beat the pants off of anyone that was nearby. They hosted many dinner parties. Buddy leaves to cherish in his memory his loving wife, Edith; five beautiful children, Sherry, Brian (Tracey), Kim, Karen and Yvette; incredible grandchildren, Siedah (who they raised from infancy), D'Andre, Eric, Leslie, Kansas, Paris (Champ), Christina, Ayana, CJ, AJ, Tyere, Aliyu, Ahmed, Tajanee and Alliyah Dabo, Zacharia and Tyler; three sweetest great-grandchildren, Shawn, Jeffrey Prince and Cameron. He also leaves two sisters, Mabel and Virginia; one brother, Joseph (Senora);two sisters-in-law, Barbara Harvey-David and Maxine Upshur; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark; stepdaughter, Veronica Lynn; his mother and father, sisters, Shirley and Christine; and brother, George Washington, Jr. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Saturday June 3, at the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel at 2395 Sixth St., N.W., Washington, DC 20059. Family hour will be from 10:00 a.m., until time of the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Calvin Freeland, officiating.
