Roland W. "Cayutano" Kave, also known as "Mambo King" dies at 87. Roland Wesley "Cayutano" Kave was born in Washington, DC on February 16, 1931. He attended DC Public Schools and graduated from Dunbar High School. Roland is the third of four children born to the late John Warren Kave, Sr. and Corinne Millicent Kave. Roland is affectionately known as "DC's original "Mambo King." He brought the "Mambo" to Washington, DC and taught several hundred people the mambo and other dance steps. Throughout the 1950's, he taught and performed at the Tropical Room in historic Dunbar Hotel, the Casbah, and McEwen's Capital Caravan Ballroom, just to name a few. The "Mambo King" was also a band leader and recorded several songs with his Latin Jazz band,'Roland Kave and His Fabulous Los Diablos.' In the 1970's Roland returned to 'show biz' and started a Latin disco. By this time mambo changed to salsa and he continued to dance. In the 1990s you would find him dancing at the Hollywood Ballroom in Silver Spring, MD and several other venues in the area. Roland also enjoyed 'spinning music' and as a member of the Banneker Ballroom Dance Club would DJ the annual Galas and other special events. In 2000, Roland told his story to the Washington Post "Living the Salsa Life." In 2016, Old Time D.C. shared a photo of him dancing at the Caravan Ballroom located on the historic "Black Broadway on U St" He is survived by brother, Kenneth E. Kave, nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins and friends. The Kave family is honored to celebrate his life and legacy.
