Obituary

Monica Patrice Harris, lovingly known as "Monie" to close family and friends, was born on July 9, 1979 in Washington, DC to the late James Edward Dozier II and Delois Theresa Mills, passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2016. Monica was the middle of six children and loved her siblings very dearly. Monica attended Foundation Baptist Church of Deliverance in Washington, DC, where she learned basic biblical principles and an early love for the Lord. Monica was a member of the graduating class of 1997 from Central Senior High School. In 1997, along with her family, Monica became a member of the Eagle's Nest Life Center Church in Oxon Hill, MD. It was here at Eagle's Nest Life Center Church, Monica gained a passion for volunteering. Monica was a volunteer in the BEAK ministry, assisting with sound and media during church services, and also sung with the youth group, Beyond Praise. In addition, she also sung with the Dwayne Montgomery Enterprises (DME) Choir. After high school graduation, Monica was accepted to Bowie State University where she earned a dual bachelor's degrees: a Bachelor of Science in History and Government (2003), and a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry (2006). While attending Bowie State, Monica joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., and became very active in community service, women's and youth outreach. It is here at Bowie State University where Monica met, dated, and fell in love with her future husband, Joseph Harris who she lovingly referred to as "Babe". After completing her studies at Bowie, Monica moved to Lansing, MI and continued to work towards her passion in science and her loving relationship with her college sweetheart. While in Michigan, Joe and Monica joined the Riverview Church in Holt, MI, and made it their church home. In 2007, she began working as an Acumedia QC Microbiology Laboratory Technician for the Neogen Corporation - Food Safety Division, and was later promoted in 2009 to Microbiological Media QC Supervisor. Monica didn't stop there, she also worked as a research laboratory technician for the Center for Gene Therapy at University of Michigan. In December 2013, Monica received a Master of Science degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology from Michigan State University, and also earned a certification in Molecular Laboratory Diagnostics. Monica advanced her career in 2013, working as a Research Technologist for the Michigan State University's Large Animal Clinical Sciences Department. Her most recent place of employment was at MPI Research Inc. in Mattawan, MI, where she worked as a Biological Research Specialist. In addition to all the formal degrees and accolades Monica earned, it was on February 17, 2011 that Monica married her soulmate, Joseph Harris. From this union, they had three beautiful children. Monica absolutely adored her children, enjoyed making them laugh and taking photo booth pictures with her family (which became a Harris family tradition). Monica was able to make each child feel special while equally loving them all the same. If there was ever a question about Monica's true passion it was the love for her family. Monica leaves to mourn her husband, Joseph Harris; their three children: Zion (Age 4), Azanna (Age 3), and Zuri (Age 9 months); her mother, Delois Mills, and stepfather, Sherman Mills; five siblings: James (Jay) Dozier III (Aisha), LaTonya Holland (Roderick), Rhonda McLaughlin (Rahgi), Anthony Dozier, and Darrell Dozier; eight nieces: Briaunna, Domminique, Danielle, Ashley, Jada, Jasmine, Alyson and Janiah; six nephews: Darius, Darryn, Jeremy, James, Jahzeel and Damari; two great-nieces, one great-nephew, five uncles, seven aunts, a host of cousins, extended family members, her sorors of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. and her Bowie State University family.
