Obituary

Demetrice J. Rogers "Mitt" (Age 96) Born Myrtle Demetrice Joyner on November 26, 1919 in the town of Oriental, in Pamlico County, North Carolina, Mrs. Rogers (a.k.a. Mitt) was the second of four surviving children born to the late Ladie Jane and Phillip Neal Joyner. Circa 1927, the family moved to the Deanwood neighborhood in Northeast Washington, DC where Demetrice first attended the Capital View Baptist Church where she was baptized. In 1934, her father transferred the family's membership to the Contee A.M.E. Zion Church, which she has attended for over 70 years. At Contee she was a member of the Junior Choir, the Missionary Society, the Senior Usher Board, and the Willing Workers Club, and an original member of the Gospel Chorus. Demetrice was educated in the District of Columbia Public School system. She attended Burrville Elementary, Browne Junior High, and graduated from Armstrong Senior High in 1939. After graduation, she worked at the Office of Price Administration (OPA) until 1944. After leaving OPA she worked in the food service area at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital from which she retired after 34 years of government service. On January 31, 1948 she married the late Maurice Oliver Hawkins of Washington, DC. From that union two sons were born, Michael Eugene Hawkins and Richard Keith Hawkins. After the death of Mr. Hawkins in 1955, she married the late Peter Rogers in August of 1958. Mrs. Rogers had a lifelong wanderlust that she loved to indulge by traveling throughout the United States by train, plane, motor coach and car, cruising the Caribbean, Alaska, and Europe, touring South Africa and visiting many points in between. She enjoyed socializing over the years with her many friends. She was a member of social clubs, and of the Rose of Sharon under the United Order of Odd Fellows. She loved to play Pokeno. In her later years she attended senior exercise classes at the YMCA. Also, she traveled all over the region with her group of ladies (octogenarians like herself she referred to as the "Gang") to go shopping, to the movies, dining out and just having an all-around good time. Mrs. Rogers (a.k.a. Grandma) had a strong sense of family and was often called upon to support family members in need. Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by one grandchild, Michelle C. Hawkins. She is survived by two sons, Michael E. Hawkins and Richard K. Hawkins, Sr.; two daughters-in-law, Ingrid and Juana; four grandchildren, Veronica P. White, Richard K. Hawkins, Jr., Kevin M. Hawkins, and Nicholas Hawkins; three great grandchildren, Michael White, Gilliam Hawkins and Shayla Stockton; one nephew, Daniel C. Joyner, Jr.; two nieces, Deborah Collins and Judy Joyner; a "daughter", Bea Respers; and a host of extended family and friends. Visitation Wednesday, December 30 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service 11:00 a.m. at Contee A.M.E. Zion Church, 903 Division Avenue, N.E., Washington, DC 20019. Interment Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Suitland, Maryland.
