On Wednesday, December 21, 2016, Alverna Virginia Mackley Miller was set free from the confines of her earthly ailing body and rose to spend eternity with the Lord. A native Washingtonian, Alverna was born on August 15, 1935. Though she retired from the Arlington County Public School System after 30 years of service (Thomas Jefferson Middle School, Arlington County School Board), she began her teaching career in Washington, DC (Paul Jr. and Woodson Jr. High Schools) - the city that she loved. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Deacon Henry J. Miller; daughter and son-in-law, Rev. Dr. Paula Miller-Lester (Allen); grandson, Deacon Allen C. Lester; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Aaronita Brown and Monica S. McGriff (Rev. Dr. Lloyd T.); a brother and sister-in-law Elder A. Lamont Mackley (Marlane C.); and nieces and nephews that she truly loved. Services will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at The First Baptist Church of Deanwood, 1008 45th Street, NE, Washington, DC 20019. Viewing 10 a.m. Services at 11 a.m. Interment Maryland National Memorial Park.
